ER Visit on Thanksgiving Eve

This morning was like every morning. We wake up groggy. Bryan and Izee go downstairs while I'm supposed to be getting in the shower. Practically every morning, to Bryan's disappointment, I fall back asleep for 20 minutes or so. I rush out of bed when I realize I've fallen back asleep and jump into the shower.

While I was in the shower, I heard a strange cry of Isaac's coming from our bedroom. I thought, "He's either hurt or they're playing."

Enter Bryan: "Caron, he's hurt. Get out of the shower. We have to go to the emergency room!"

I was right. They were playing AND Isaac was hurt. Isaac was standing on our bed and he fell into the edge of one of our nightstands, making a perfect slice above his left eyebrow about a half inch long. The gash looked deep and painful.

We rushed to get dressed and left for Children's Hospital. I sat in the back of the car with Izee and fed him cookies, which seemed to make him feel a little better. (Note the full mouth in the image below.)

Our experience with Children's Hospital was great. They were very nice and we hardly had to wait at all. Although, when we did have to wait, Isaac made good of the time and played with his trains:

They had to sedate Isaac before applying the Dermabond (glue) to his laceration, which was both scary and funny. He was kind of like a wet noodle, drunk and wobbly. And though, I'm sure it helped calm him, it took three of us to hold him while the Doctor sealed the gash.

It took a while for the sedative to wear off. I spent over an hour trying to coax a sloppy, dizzy two-year-old to sit still and watch a movie before he finally gave into his fatigue.

Here are some photos from this afternoon. His injury looks pretty good and he doesn't seem to notice the bandages or glue... yet. (The Doctor and Nurse each said that one benefit of the sedative is that it could make him forget the whole experience.)

I knew that I would probably have to take Isaac to the emergency room at some point. It comes with the territory of being a parent. I just didn't expect to feel as helpless as I did. I think Isaac was the strongest out of all the three of us, going about his business of play while Bryan and I twiddled our thumbs nervously waiting for the Doctor.

He's a trooper and a daredevil. Both probably typical traits of most boys.

And while I fear our next visit to the ER, I know that I can't stop him from being the curious, crazy kid that makes him Isaac.

Please have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Oh, and no jumping on the bed!

Lynne:

Oh how I remember those days! It's so scary. Nothing is easy about raising kids. ER trips suck. He seems to have taken it all well, that would figure. It's usually much tougher on the parents. Thank God and I am sure glad Isaac wasn't hurt worse. The poor little guy was just having fun with daddy. All little kids have jumped on a bed. Many years ago........I made sure if that fun game was going on, I'd place our pillows over the night stands. I wish him a quick recovery. You too! Isaac, go read a book to your parents to help relax them now.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Hint: Vitamin E oil helps with healing and lessen any scar. Also Tea tree oil and garlic oil.

Jordan:

Isaac - I'm sorry you are hurt. You should have your mommy read "No More Monkey's Jumping On the Bed" to you again!! I will kiss your boo-boo next time I see you:)

Tell your mommy and daddy I said Happy Thanksgiving. I'm having a blast in Plainville, KS with my Grandma and Grandpa.

Love,
Jordan

The Greeningers:

Oh Buddy- we are so sorry for your Boo Boo- But now you will have a tough guy scar like Chase has on his Chin- I second Jordans comment about "No more monkeys jumping on the bed".. Chase sings that song a lot- mostly as he's jumping- heh !
We love you-
Love, Kel Dave and Chase from KC
