"Elementary" Debut

I have worked at Motion Express, a local dance studio, as a teacher and choreographer for a little over 10 years. It's a job that's very fulfilling for me and one that's close to my heart.

I was asked by the Director of our dance studio to choreograph and teach a creative and fun tap routine this year for Dance Force, to which I excitedly said, "YES!" (Dance Force is our select student dance company and is comprised of many different pieces and soloists who compete regionally and nationally.)

Since September 2003, I've been teaching this additional class and choreographing a piece titled "Elementary". It's comprised of 6 eight-year-old girls and is based around an elementary school environment and games and activities associated with elementary students. I am so proud of the concept, choreography, and the enthusiasm of the girls in the piece. They've come so far since September!

Today was our first competition and they did WONDERFLLY WELL! : ) We received a score to give us a gold award. (The only award better than gold is platinum, and you have to have almost a perfect score for that.)

Their tap steps were all together, their faces and bodies were lively, and I couldn't be more proud of them! : )

We can only get better from here! YAY!

p.s. I was so nervous this morning. I was never that nervous when I used to dance in these competitions. It's a completely different experience as a choreographer. Fun and very rewarding, but nerve wracking! The photo above is from the side of the stage where I was standing. It's a little blurry... I was still shaky and nervous and this was taken near the end of the piece! : )
